5th Grade Farm and Harvest

At the beginning of the year, the students cleared out knee-high weeds and remnants of last year’s garden. They worked well together. Then the district came in and rotortilled the garden area to loosen the soil for us. Meanwhile, the students got into garden teams, created team names, and planned out what they would plant and grow in their own garden plots. Each team then “staked” out their 6’ by  3’ garden plot, added soil amendments (compost and manure), and planted the seeds.

Now, the students are already harvesting fresh organic radishes,  lettuce, and spinach. Other plants we are growing include peas, beets, carrots, potatoes, cabbage, and cauliflower. The students are excited and enjoying the fruits of their labor.
